In other religions, God is
simply this Òtranscendent holy oneÓ you can never touch. When Jesus Christ came
back to earth following His death on the Cross, He said to a doubting Thomas,
ÒJust come over here and feel me so youÕll know IÕm real.Ó
The reason Christ is called
the Word is because HeÕs the manifest person of the godhead.
ÒHe's the one who brings God
out of the theory—the ether and the unknown—and down into the place
where He could actually enter into your experience,Ó explains my pastor, Richard
Jordan. ÒHe steps out of eternity where He is and steps into His creation and literally takes it upon Himself. And
thatÕs something my mind doesn't grasp! He literally joins Himself in creation
to Him, and in that unique person of all of the universe—the celebrity of
all time—He becomes the man Christ Jesus.
ÒWhen you look at that, you
say, ÔWow, I understand what Jeremiah's saying back there when he says,
'Forasmuch as there is none like
unto thee Lord.Õ Man, there's nobody like him! Nobody. You say, ÔWow, God, thou art great—who
wouldn't fear you?! Who wouldn't bow before you and say, 'You're the man!'?"
After Thomas did as Christ
instructed, he cried, "My Lord and my God," to which Christ responded,
ÒThomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that
have not seen, and yet have believed.Ó
Jordan explains, ÒWhat Thomas was saying was, ÔYou're Jehovah
God.Õ Now in Exodus 34, it says nobody can have that position except Jehovah
and that HeÕs a Jealous God. You say, ÔBut I thought jealousy wasn't a good
idea?Ô Well, jealousy that isn't true isn't so good, but if you can back it up.... Isaiah 42:8 is what that's talking about. God says,
ÔI am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither
my praise to graven images.Õ
ÒJehovah says, ÔI'm God; I'm
the Almighty, and I'm not going to give that position to anybody. There's none like me. I've got a right to it and I'm
jealous over it. I won't give my glory to anybody else and donÕt anyone come
along and try to take my glory.Õ Ó
Look at this fantastic
passage in Jeremiah 10 that completely blows Catholicism and all other pagan
systems out of the water:
ÒBut the LORD is the true
God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth
shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
[11] Thus shall ye say unto them,
The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish
from the earth, and from under these heavens.
[12] He hath made the earth by his
power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the
heavens by his discretion.
[13] When he uttereth his voice,
there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to
ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth
forth the wind out of his treasures.
[14] Every man is brutish in
his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten
image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
[15] They are vanity, and the work
of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.Ó
Jordan explains, ÒHe's going
to take his wrath and ignite it on them and destroy them. Who's He going to
destroy? The gods. Those who say they're gods who didn't make heaven and earth.
When He says, ÔI'm the Lord, there's none like me,Õ He's saying, ÔThere isn't
any room in my heaven and earth for anybody who says he's me. No room out there.
I've been all over creation; I've looked, I've seen; there isn't anybody like
me out there.Õ
ÒThe fascinating thing about
John 20 (in the conversation between Christ and Thomas) is He says, ÔJust come
and put your hand on me.Õ You see God has designed it so in the person of Jesus
Christ you and I come and touch with Him. He can become real and tangible in
your life and mine. He's not just the Ôtranscendent otherÕ of theology and of
religion. He's the one who comes to enter into the event of our lives and to be
one with us.Ó
From Acts 20:28 reference to
Òthe church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood,Ó we know it was
God on the Cross with His Son.
This is why all the negative
speculation about Jesus ChristÕs words on the Cross, ÒMy God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me,Ó doesnÕt jive. II Cor. 5:18 even says ÒGod, who hath reconciled
us to himself by Jesus Christ.Ó
Jordan confirms, ÒGod was
personally present in the person of Jesus Christ at Calvary. How's that
possible? Only one way: He's God. HeÕs saying, ÔGod, the Father, and God the
Spirit, why have you forsaken me?Õ Who was being forsaken? God the Son. God was
in Christ. He is God even on Calvary's Cross.
In Old Testament prophecy,
the Lord even says Òthey shall look upon me whom they have pierced.Ó
Isaiah 53:10 says, "Yet
it pleased the Lord (Jehovah) to bruise him (Jesus Christ); he (Jehovah, God
the Father) hath put Him (Jehovah, God the Son) to grief.Ó
Jordan says, ÒDo you see two
Jehovahs in that verse? Here's Jehovah being pierced at the Cross and yet the verse
says Jehovah bruised him. Now that gets you into the doctrine of the Trinity. People
tell you, ÔWell the Trinity is not in the Old Testament,Õ but there it is plain
as day. Both of them bear the name
Jehovah. There are two Jehovahs at Calvary. Just like there are two Jehovahs
back in Genesis 19: One's up in heaven, pouring out the fire and brimstone of
Sodom and Gommorha, and one's with Abraham watching it happen.Ó
God says in Isaiah 48:16, ÒI
have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there
am I: and now the Lord God (meaning the Father) and his Spirit (meaning God the
Spirit) hath sent me.Ó The ÔmeÕ is the Redeemer, Jesus Christ. There's all
three of them in two verses— in fact, theyÕre all in one verse. The
speaker in the verse is Christ, God the Son.
(EditorÕs Note: In the Old
Testament, whenever you see the expression Lord GOD, God is in uppercase
letters to signify it's Jehovah. Adoniah Jehovah is always God the Father, and
when you see LORD in all caps, that's always God the Son.)
