I never stop being fascinated
by this whole thing about pre-Flood fallen angels who came down to earth to
fornicate with women, producing offspring of giant men.
When I wrote about this supernatural
phenomenon the first time (To read, click on ÒBack IssuesÓ and scroll down
to ÒBig Problems,Ó Feb. 12, 2006), I had a friend comment that the information IÕd
presented about the giants from Genesis 6 and the epistle of Jude was Òwaaay
out there,Ó meaning, I take it, ÒThatÕs too much for me to believe!Ó
Recently, while flipping
through my Barnes & Noble general educational book on Greek and Roman
mythology, ÒTitans & Olympians,Ó I found this gem under a segment on the
battles of the gods: ÒZeus had two more contests to face before he could
confidently assert his authority over the world. The first was the
Gigantomachy, the war against the Giants, which was one of the most popular
myths in ancient Greece.Ó
As I just pointed out in my
June 9 piece, entitled ÒCloset Organizer,Ó renowned 1st Century
Jewish historian Flavius Josephus wrote about how Òmany angels of God
accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all
that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for
the tradition is, That these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the
Grecians call giants.Ó
In a sermon not long ago, my
pastor, Richard Jordan of Shorewood Bible Church, Rolling Meadows, Ill. (www.graceimpact.org), pointed out how the
genetic aberration producing the giants didnÕt completely die out until the times
of David in I and II Samuel.
ÒIn King DavidÕs day the last
five of the giants in the earth lived and David killed one of them, Goliath,
and his mighty men killed the others—GoliathÕs brothers and so forth,Ó
says Jordan. ÒAnd thatÕs how the post-Flood giants were destroyed.Ó
Now, as weÕre told in Genesis
6, these giants were not only abnormally large in physical stature, they also
possessed superior might and intellect.
So think about this in
connection with such mysteries as the erection of the Great Pyramid around
2,700 B.C., or several hundred years before the Flood:
ÒHave you ever watched the
History Channel where theyÕve tried to explain how nobody can figure out how
they built the Pyramids?Ó says Jordan. ÒHow the Great Pyramid has all the
astrological measurements of the heavens that man didnÕt know about until the
20th Century? How it sights off of the North Star, how whoever built
it was a geometrically advanced mind and that the laws of physics—the
laws of astro-physics and the laws algebra and geometry—had to have been
second nature to whoever designed it because of the way the thing is built. And
then you get those big old building blocks and watch where theyÕre trying to
explain how they put the capstone on top. . . Maybe, just perhaps, thereÕs an
explanation for some of that. . .
ÒI know what people say. They
say the same thing people said in Christopher ColumbusÕ day: ÔIf you go out
there far enough youÕre going to fall off the end of the world. And there are
dragons out there whoÕll eat you up; thatÕs why you never come back.Õ
ÒAnd they quoted Scripture to
talk about the dragons in the sea. The problem was the sea that the verse they
used (Psalm 74:13) was talking about wasnÕt the Mediterranean or the Atlantic;
it was out there in the heavens and the dragon was in the heavens. It wasnÕt a
physical one, it was a spiritual one—in Satan. And so now today we say,
ÔWell, thatÕs all mythology.Õ I read these things and say, ÔHmm, maybe it isnÕt
all mythology.Õ Ó
